Michele Koan, DVM
Chief of Staff
A Flushing native, Dr. Koan graduated from Flushing High School in 1999. After earning high honors and numerous scholarships and accolades, including being voted ‘Most Intelligent’ by her classmates and being crowned ‘Miss Flushing’, Dr. Koan headed off to Michigan State to pursue her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. She earned her Bachelors degree from the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at MSU in Animal Science, with an emphasis in poultry and equine management, and was accepted immediately into Veterinary School on the campus of Michigan State. Originally she intended to do large animal and equine medicine. However, before the onset of her clinical rotations, while back at home during a summer internship with Dr. Brown at Riverside Animal Hospital, she fell in love with small animal medicine and decided that after graduation she would move back to Flushing to serve her hometown community.
In 2006, Dr. Koan graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine with Honors. She immediately became established at Riverside Animal Hospital and has been here ever since, helping Flushing’s citizens care for the needs of their pets. Dr. Koan also served for five years as the veterinarian for Genesee County before resigning in 2015.
Dr. Koan and her husband successfully import, breed, show and train registered haflinger horses at a national level. In her spare time, she competes in pleasure harness driving and hunt seat and dressage competitions with her horses. Together, with their young daughters, they enjoy their family farm, which is home to their show horses, a rescued German Shepherd, four spoiled barn cats and a special ‘purebred snuggler’ cat, whom they affectionately refer to as ‘their son’, and a crew of chickens.
